A Wrong Signal
font size

The Japanese government, disregarding China's strong opposition, went so far as to issue Lee Teng-hui, typical representative of the "Taiwan Independence" forces the entry visa to Japan. When the news broke out the Chinese people and all those Chinese in overseas were filled with indignation, expressing their strong protests.

Three years ago, Lee Teng-hui paid a visit to Japan on the pretext of "to see doctor" and this time there's no reason at all to swindle people and the Japanese explanation is just a "private sightseeing". However, many Japanese papers reported on their front-pages Lee Teng-hui's visit to Japan. Should he be an ordinary tourist how could he be brought to such a limelight? As revealed Lee Teng-hui's coming to Japan this time has been discussed many a time among high-ranking officials in the Japanese government and after ceaseless arguments of the old and new ministers of foreign affairs it was finally approved by the Prime minister. All these indicate that Lee Teng-hui is not an ordinary tourist.

Obviously, the visa issued by Japan to Lee Teng-hui is a sheer connivance and support to the separatist activities for "Taiwan Independence", serving a wrong signal to the "Taiwan Independence" separating forces and a challenge to the great cause of peaceful reunification of China. However, it's not unique but has its counterpart. Last summer some Japanese media made a very big report on the situation of the Taiwan Straits, haranguing about the so-called "armed threat" by the Chinese People's Liberation Army on Taiwan, stressing that Taiwan was the "lifeline" of Japan and so on and so forth. Some media even resorted to mouths of some rightwing scholars to state that for Japan, Taiwan was the "lifeline" of Japan's economy and security. Should China fulfill its reunification Japan would be always at an unfavorable place when doing deals with China, etc. Obviously, some political forces in Japan, especially those rightwing forces are unwilling to see China become prosperous and strong, and reunited and therefore, they are engendering by hooks by crooks new tensions along the Taiwan Straits in order to push ahead the "Taiwan Independence" in an attempt to hinder the progress of the peaceful reunification of China.

Moreover, what deserves our attention is that the Pro-Taiwan forces in Japan's political arena at present are more rampant and without scruple. The initial organization for "Taiwan Independence" was brewed and developed in Japan, for which many Japanese veteran politicians and large enterprises had been offered their support either overt or covert to the "Taiwan Independence" forces. Now, though the batch of the banal Pro-Taiwan forces in Japan was out of the Japanese political arena yet a batch of new Pro-Taiwan politicians carefully cultivated by them, enterprise-bosses and some rightwing men of letters have already stepped into their shoes, jumping energetically onto the bandwagon of the forces for "Taiwan Independence". In this respect, both the Chinese people and the Japanese people have to maintain a high vigilance on them.

The permission given by the Japanese government to Lee Teng-hui's visit to Japan is beyond doubt to add snow on frost over the ruffled Sino-Japanese relations at present. The Japanese government should be able to know, the Taiwan issue has everything to do with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, the interest at the core of China. The Japanese government cannot but be very clear about the heavy weight of the Taiwan issue in the hearts of the Chinese people. Wang Yi, Chinese ambassador to Japan has already clearly expressed in his New Year address at the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations by saying that Lee Teng-hui is not only an adventurous henchman for separatist activities but also a troublemaker or may even be a war-creator. For such a dangerous person the international community, especially the peripheral countries of China are turning on a red light to him and it's only the Japanese government that switches on the green light for him. Lee Teng-hui has betrayed the Chinese nation and has been reduced to be contemptible dross of the Chinese people yet Japan expresses its "friendly goodwill" to him. This cannot but make the Chinese people feel difficult to understand and indignant.

The ulterior motive of Lee Teng-hui's visit to Japan is to sow the seeds of discord between the Sino-Japanese relations and resort to Japan to rouse up some atmosphere for the forces of "Taiwan Independence". However, the reunification of China is a mega-trend and the will of the people, which nobody on earth will be able to draw back. Whoever helps the "Taiwan Independence" forces to risk danger in desperation will ultimately reap what one has sown.
