Transportation capacity of the Daqin railway tops 150 mln tons

The sole railway used exclusively for coal transportation in China, the Daqin railway has fulfilled its goal to transport 150 mln tons in 2004 8 days earlier than expected. This signifies the heavy loaded railway transportation of China has reached advanced level in the world, sources from the Ministry of Railway of China say.

Transporting coal from Shanxi, Shaanxi and Western Inner Mongolia to outside world largely depends on railway. Starting from Datong, Shanxi Province, the 653-km Daqin railway runs through Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin and ends in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. The railway serves as a major channel for transporting coal produced in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia to the world outside.

The Daqin railway has been selected by the railway department as a model for expanding existing railway's transportation capacity. The annual transportation capacity of 150 mln tons has been achieved and the capacity will reach 200 mln tons in 2005.

Through exploiting the potentials internally, the Daqin railway's transportation capacity has witnessed an increase of 50 mln tons this year. The increase of 50 mln tons is equivalent to the transportation capacity of a new channel built with dozens of billion yuan, or equals to one year's coal consumption by 13.4 medium-size power plants. This achievement has added industrial value of 100 bln yuan for China.
