Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong expressed his condolences to the Sri Lankan government and people who have suffered from the disaster of tsunami, while meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar in Beijing on December 29.
"I feel very shocked for the casualties and property damage caused by the tsunami," Zeng said, adding that China and Sri Lankaare good neighbors and close friends.
"The Chinese government has delivered emergency humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka and I hope it will be helpful," Zeng said. He said he believes the Sri Lankan people can overcome difficulties and rebuild their homeland under the leadership of the government.
Zeng said he appreciated Sri Lanka's consistent support for China's position on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and human rights.
"China would like to further expand the friendly relations with Sri Lanka and other neighboring countries to achieve common prosperity," he said.
Kadirgamar said he appreciated China's aid, saying it indicated the friendship between the two governments and peoples.
The two countries have great potentials for cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology, culture, education and tourism, the minister said.
Sri Lanka will further cooperation with China in all fields in a bid to promote bilateral ties to a new high, he noted.
Kadirgamar cut short his visit to China and was expected to leave Beijing Wednesday night.
