The Caribbean countries are considering the establishment of a regional tsunami early warning system for preventing huge losses in such disasters as that in Asia, said press reports on Wednesday.
The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CEDRA) is now holding talks with several organizations such as the Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center and the University of Puerto Rico Seismic Network on the establishment of a tsunami early warning system for the Caribbean, the reports said.
Some experts have analyzed the feasibility and availability of such a system, saying its basic framework already exists as
several offices have been set up for studying climate change and underwater volcanoes.
Established in September 1991 and serving the Caribbean Community and Common Market, the regional inter-governmental CEDRA groups 16 countries in the region and its main function is to make immediate and coordinated response to any disaster affecting its member states.
