Sudanese President Omar Hassan el-Basshir says his government will firmly implement the peace deals reached with southern Sudan rebels.

Sudan's government and southern rebel negotiators raced against the clock to agree on the final chapters of a peace deal on December 31, 2004 and clear the way for a comprehensive pact to end Africa's longest-running civil war. In a speech, Basshir says his government will focus on the reconstruction work and calls on international community for help.

He adds the government will further efforts to solve Darfur crisis through dialogue.

On Friday, the Khartoum government and the main southern Sudan rebel group signed accords on two outstanding issues, paving the way for the signing of a comprehensive peace deal to end Africa's longest-running conflict.
