Syria reasserts support to One China policy

Syrian Prime Minister Mahammad NajiOtri on Sunday reasserted Syria's adherence to the "One China" policy and expressed support to the reunification of China.

During a meeting with visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Lu Guozeng, Otri said Syria attached great importance to developing relations with China.

He added that bilateral ties between the two countries have entered a new phase after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Beijing last June.

Syria appreciated the great achievements China has made during its reform and opening-up process, said the prime minister, adding that Syria hopes to learn and benefit from the successful experiences of China in various fields.

For his part, Lu said relations between the two countries developed smoothly, particularly in the fields of political and economic cooperation since diplomatic ties were established in1956.

Lu also briefed Otri the achievements of the recent visits paid by Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan to the Palestinian territories and Israel, informing him of China's support to revive the stalled Middle East peace process.

Otri expected that China could play a bigger role in the peace process.

Lu arrived here on Saturday for a two-day official visit to Syria.
