Some 70 militants of the nationalist group Etnocacerrista Movement (ME) who besieged a police station of the Andean Peruvian city of Andahuaylas, surrendered and laid down their arms at noon on Tuesday (1700 GMT).

Many of the rebels, former recruits of the armed forces, dressed in military fatigues, while some wore civilian clothes.

Almost at the same time ME leader, retired army major Antauro Humala, arrived captured here.

The 17 hostages they were holding at a police station were released unharmed, authorities announced.
