Mexico will use a US fast vessel to send some 20 tons of humanitarian aid to the victims of the December 26 tsunami disaster in South and Southeast Asia countries, said the US Embassy to Mexico.

US ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza said in a statement that the ship will depart Sunday from the Mexican port of Acapulco with humanitarian materials donated by the Red Cross and other civil organizations as well as the Health Ministry.

Garza praised Mexican authorities and civic organizations for their solidarity with the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that affected South and Southeast Asia, and East Africa.

"We recognize the generosity of the Mexicans, who know what it takes to recover from natural disasters, by supplying assistance to the survivors in Asia; and we are also proud to offer our navy ship to contribute to help in the reconstruction of the affected countries," said the ambassador.
