What do Chen Shui-bian and Lee Teng-hui talk about?
font size

Just being back from Japan, Lee Teng-hui held a secret talk with Chen Shui-bian for two hours. The present Mayor of Kaohsiung Frank Chang-ting Hsieh was also present during the talk. Nothing was disclosed after the "Green Three Giants" talks.

Recently Chen made remarks and put forward the "four needs,'' which are the so-called "Only need contributions to political stability; need common people's happiness and benefit; need the harmony of different groups and need peace across the Straits. Nothing is more important than becoming reconciled and cooperation between the government and the public.

It seems that the speech is out of the "four nos'' which requires Taiwan to refrain from declaring independence; changing the "national title''; including the concept of "state-to-state'' relations between the island and the mainland in its "constitution''; and promoting any referendum on changing the status quo on independence. Especially he repeated the "four''. The "four nos'' he put forward in his inaugural speech have not been put into practice. People the world over only listen to what he says and they do not believe in what he says as he would not abide by his words.

Most people speculate the nearly three-hour secret talk was mainly focused on the distribution of powers between the "Democratic Progressive Party'' and the "Taiwan Solidarity Union'', and personal arrangement for the "Legislative Yuan''. The so-called "cabinet'' composed by the ruling party and the opposition parties in Taiwan falls within the publicity activities only.

That is because the "democratic progressive party (DPP)'' got closer to "the people first party'' recently. By a coalition "cabinet'' as bait the DPP will have some "ministers'' to be taken by the "the people first party'', even saying the deputy head of the "Legislative Yuan'' would be some one from "the people first party'' or that it is likely to have James Soong formed the "cabinet, which is in line with the four needs.

That is an obvious movement for dividing the Pan-blue camp and inspired many who want to be officials in the "cabinet''. And the Kuomintang members are given cold shoulder and feel bad. Chen Shui-bian authorities are not qualified for their ruling capacity. However, they are good at creating contradictions, spreading rumors and increasing social disorder and unrest. These political methods are aimed at holding the reigns of their government.

With a careful observation, the authorities of the democratic progressive party also apply these methods to the relations across the Straits.

The actual contents of the talk held between Chen Shui-bian and Lee Teng-hui are disclosed by a senior official with the democratic progressive party. The official said the two had a good teamwork. The two put "maintaining internal safety above resisting outside attacks''.

This explanation is reasonable As Chen believes that his main political supporters are mainly composed of the forces of "Taiwan independence''. Otherwise, they would not apply "Taiwan independence'' to their past elections. With several hours of talk with Lee, teacher of "Taiwan independence'' the effectiveness of making "Taiwan independence'' forces quiet were achieved.

The result of "maintaining internal order'' has been made. The day after the talk Lee announced he supported the "cabinet'' coalition. It doesn't matter who -- the democratic progressive party, the Kuomintang or the people first party C will cooperate in the "cabinet''. He signed with emotion that the public is too tired.

Mr Lee has a little feeling of the Taiwan public. Who would not be tired after years' elections with political struggles by ignoring common people? To tell the truth people are tired of the politicians. With the politicians headed by Lee, no words can describe what they are.

The political struggles in Taiwan have not been weakened with main disputes focused on "Taiwan independence and non-Taiwan independence''. Can some official posts of the "cabinet" solve the problem?
