Wu Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Vice Premier of the State Council, gave instructions on health care work in the work report made at the National Health Care Working Meeting 2005.

Wu Yi requires that health care departments at various levels and medical workers actively push ahead the reform of health care system under the guidance of the important thought of Three Represents and the concept of scientific development and contribute to the goal of building a harmonious socialist society, raising the health level of the nation and building a moderately affluent society in a comprehensive way.

Wu Yi said, in 2004 the state health care system submitted itself to the overall consideration, strictly abided by its duties, rallied together and strived to work hard. They made remarkable achievements in various works. In particular, they made evident progress in works such as the construction of public health care, the prevention and control of major diseases, health care work in rural areas, the reform of medical service system and rectification of malpractice in the medical industry. However, it should also be noted that the current situation of health care work still has a long way to go to meet the requirements and expectation of the Central Committee, the State Council and the general public. Public health care system is still not good enough. The task of preventing the spread of major diseases is very arduous. Changing the backward health care situation in rural areas requires continued and unswerving effort and solving the problems of access to medical care and high expenses of medical care all the more needs comprehensive treatment and work.

The National Health Care Working Meeting held in Beijing Monday made clear the five key tasks of health care work in 2005, that is, to continue to enhance the construction of public health care system, complete the construction of disease prevention and control system in a comprehensive way and basically finish the construction of medical care system; further strengthen the work on the prevention and control of major diseases, enhance the basic research of major infectious diseases and chronic non-infectious diseases and implement measures for the prevention and control of major infectious diseases and endemic diseases; reinforce health care work in rural areas, gradually improve health care conditions in rural areas and steadily expand the experiment on new cooperative medical care system; steadily unfold the experiment on the reform of urban medical service system; control prices of medicines from the source and resolutely rectify malpractices in medical procurement and medical services.
