On the basis of dealing with emergency cases, Beijing Subway has now by and large set up an on-the-spot emergency rescue system for underground accidents. This was released the other day by the subway corporation in a report to Ministry of Construction. As learned, Beijing Subway has poured in an investment of more than nine million yuan for purchasing all kinds of emergency equipment, and furthermore, 22 blocked subway entrances and exits have been cleared up.

Beijing Subway Corp. in combination with the actual development of underground and open-air rail traffic, has recently invested an additional nine million yuan for underground hardware renovation. Of the total investment, 5.2243 million yuan have been spent on the purchase of emergency respirators; 595,000 yuan on the explosion proof barrels for all stations along line one and loop line; 234,500 yuan for buying the mini-emergency respirators which have already been equipped in all stations, major and key motor rooms and worksites. Apart from that, another 2.66 million yuan investment has been added for the purchase of fire extinguishers according to the need of fire control. Meanwhile, the evacuation passages in some old and unreasonable stations have also been adjusted and improved. There are also some new improvements this time, such as the emergency lighting installations, and the evacuation signs in stations.

The current hardware upgrade indicates that the on-the-spot emergency system for underground rescue has primarily come into being.

Official in charge with Beijing Subway Corporation also noted that they were conducting a comprehensive round of safety improvement over the hidden troubles that currently exist in the underground system. The evacuation capacity, the design of evacuation signs as well as the condition of emergency lighting installations in the densely gathered spots such as the platforms, station halls and passages in all metro stations under operation have met the fire control requirement after the safety improvement. Particularly the enclosure of ventilation towers, metro entrances and exits, long-standing potential safety hazard, has been effectively improved this time.

It is reported that 22 blocked metro entrances and exits out of 29 have been cleared up and the remaining seven are now being improved.

Furthermore, the five renovation works, namely the disaster prevention and alarming system, smoke proof and discharging system, gas fire extinguishing system, distribution of hydrants as well as upgrade of water supply system for fire fighting have been put on the agenda for wiping out the hidden emergencies. The disaster prevention and alarming system in 32 Beijing metro stations and the smoke proof and discharging system in 30 stations will be under renovation within a short time to come. Additionally, the stations in the line one and loop line will be equipped with gas fire fighting system and hydrants, and all the fire-fighting water supply systems in these stations will be further improved.
