At least 30,893 people have been killed and 15,256 others injured in the huge tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake off Indonesia, according to a report issued Wednesday evening by the Center for National Operations Sri Lanka.

The massive tidal waves following the earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale on Dec. 26 crashed into the coastal villages over a wide area of Sri Lanka, displacing 835,028 others, affecting 201,717 families and leaving 6,038 still missing.

The huge disaster also completely damaged 89,323 houses while 41,216 partially battered. There are still 457 camps in the tsunami-hit areas.

The quake was the strongest over the past four decades, and the fourth largest in a century.
