Vice-premier Zeng meets EDF president

Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan met Pierre Gadonneix, chairman and chief executive officer of Electricite De France (EDF), in Beijing Thursday.

The two sides discussed issues on nuclear power industry cooperation between the two countries.

China has been stricken by a severe energy shortage since the summer of 2003 caused by rapid economic growth. The nuclear power and hydropower are among the best alternatives of the country's heavily polluting thermal power, experts here said.

It was reported that China has eight nuclear power stations and19 nuclear generating units, producing 43.7 billion kwh electricity in 2003, accounting for 2.3 percent of the country's total.
