Facilities of 90 Sri Lankan local government institutions have been destroyed during the Tsunami disaster, the Official Daily News in Colombo said on Saturday.

Of the 311 local government bodies, facilities of 90 institutions and regions under their purview in the Southern, Western and Northeastern Provinces were completely destroyed in the tidal wave catastrophe, the paper said.

Of the 42 local government institutions in the Southern Province, facilities of 17 have been destroyed, with an estimate of over 450 million rupee (about 4.5 million US dollars) damage, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon said.

Sri Lankan government has now taken a number of measures to restore the affected local government institutions to their normalfunction as soon as possible.
