The top ten news stories in China's science, technology and industry for national defense were released in Beijing on January 17. They are:

1. China made brilliant achievements in its nuclear undertaking, the exhibition on the achievements was successfully held.

2. China launched eight rockets and ten satellites, creating a record in the number and variety of the satellites launched. It applied most ever new technologies, realized the best on-orbit operation, best performance as planned and most rapid innovation in space products, technologies and management.

3. China's ship-building industry maintained the world's third place for ten consecutive years with its international status greatly enhanced.

4. Ma Zuguang was awarded "role model in science, technology and industry for national defense", and the nationals were called on to learn from him.

5. Homemade MA-60 (Modern Ark) was exported for the first time. The ERJ145 regional jets jointly made by China and Brazil were delivered for use.

6. China's self-designed and self-built large commercial nuclear power station -- the second phase of Qinshan Nuclear Power Station -- was completed and put into operation.

7. China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) won the bidding for the No. 4 line of the subway in Tehran, realizing the most valuable international project contract China ever signed.

10. Chang'an Automobile Co. Ltd of China South Industry Group jumped to the nation's third place in terms of production and sales. Its Ford Mondeo 2.5V6 was awarded the "type of 2005".

Summing up the past year, Zhang Guangqin, deputy director of China's Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, said that the situation was gratifying: great achievements were made in weaponry development and manufacturing, the economy of the military industry maintained a sustained, rapid and healthy growth and products for civilian use developed with strong momentum.
