Beijing police hold new year reception for foreign police officers

Eighty-five police liaison officers from 39 foreign embassies, including France, Russia and Spain, attended a new year reception held by the Beijing Public Security Bureau in Beijing Wednesday.

Before the reception, they also visited the Beijing Police Museum and the Beijing People's Police College.

Ma Zhenchuan, head of the bureau, said he hoped to strengthen cooperation with foreign counterparts on cracking down on terrorism, gun and drug trafficking, and illegal border-crossing.

"We have to ensure the 2008 Beijing Olympic games is a safe one," Ma said.

Becoming more internationally involved, the city's police has been sending its staff to the international peacekeeping missions in East Timor, Kosovo and Haiti and built bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms with foreign counterparts.

"International cooperation will enhance our capacity to battle cross-border crimes," said Andrey G. Gorobets from the Russian embassy.
