Anti-war activists protest during Bush's inauguration

Anti-war activists protested Thursday during President George W. Bush's inaugural speech and the ensuing celebration parade, prompting police to use tear gas at one point.

Some people attending the inauguration ceremony, held in front of the Capitol, chanted anti-war slogans as Bush delivered his 17-minute speech. Bush continued his address without interruption.

Some protesters were briefly detained by police and then released after Bush finished speaking.

Afterwards, as Bush's limo led the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue and home to the White House, some protesters held up signs such as "Bring The Troops Home" and "Guilty of War Crimes" along the parade route.

At one point, police fired tear gas to disperse those who hurled debris and tried to break through a security fence along the route. More than 100 police officers were at the scene where hundreds of protesters had gathered.
