Chissano says Bush won't change US policy toward Mozambique

Outgoing Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has expressed confidence that George W. Bush in his second term of US President will keep the same kind of relationship with Mozambique, local media reported on Friday.

Chissano justified his optimism on the grounds that nothing in Mozambique is happening that might be a reason for concern on the part of the United States, although there might be slight changes.

He expressed this view during a ceremony organized by workers of the Mozambican Foreign Ministry.

Chissano described the relations between the two countries as something that was valuable not only for Mozambique, but also for the southern African region and the African continent as a whole.

"I think that the United States will continue in the same direction, because President Bush has wished a better future for Mozambique," said Chissano.

Bush was sworn in Thursday in Washington for his second term as the President of the United States.
