China to eliminate extra educational fees: official
font size

Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Ji said Thursday that Chinese government is confident that it can eliminate extraneous fees charged by individual schools.

"Random charging in education infringe upon people's interests, obstruct the education reform and especially has a bad effect upon the school children," Zhou said in a press conference held Thursday in Beijing.

In recent years, Zhou acknowledged, China has been promoting "one fee for all" in compulsory education, which includes all charges and forbids added fees. This practice has so far proved viable and effective.

With the fast progress of China's economy, more and more Chinese parents prefer to send their children to schools with best education resources. Therefore, some schools try to profit by charging extra fees, such as charge for extracurricular activities or weekend classes.

Zhou said the problems can be solved with more governmental input, regulations and rules as well as enhanced supervision.

According to Zhou, the Chinese government has clearly set a line between random charging and necessary fees, and experts are working on more specific rules and regulations in line with people's living conditions in different regions.

Local government at all levels in China are confident that they can solve the problems, with more national financial support of the local educational system.
