Representatives of overseas Chinese in South Korea on Saturday evening held a symposium at Lotte Hotel, commemorating the 10th anniversary of an important speech delivered by then General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

The speech, entitled "Continuing to Endeavor for the Accomplishment of the Grand Cause of Reunification of the Motherland," contains an eight-point proposal on some important questions that have a bearing on the development of the relations between the two sides across the Taiwan Straits and the promotion of the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

Representatives from South Korean Overseas Chinese Peace and Reunification Promotion Association, Seoul Overseas Chinese Association and other South Korean overseas Chinese civic groups attended the symposium, expressing their anti-split will.

A statement was released at the end of the symposium, which called on all the overseas Chinese to fight against "independence of Taiwan."

"Jiang Zemin's speech has demonstrated the Chinese government's resolution and sincerity to unite compatriots from both sides of the Straits and to promote the peaceful reunification of the motherland. However, in the past ten years, the Taiwan authorities has not showed any sincerity for reunification, but upgraded independent activities," the statement said.

"To protect motherland's territory, to make contribution to reunification of the motherland is the responsibility of all the domestic and overseas Chinese people. We, overseas Chinese in South Korea, firmly hold the peaceful reunification policy of our country and oppose any kinds of independence of Taiwan," said the statement.
