Russia respects results of Iraq's election
font size

Russia expressed its respect for the results of Iraq's election in a statement made by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday, the NTV television channel reported.

"Of course we will respect the choice of the Iraqi people," said Alexander Yakovenko, spokesman for the ministry.

But it is very important for the Iraqis themselves to accept and acknowledge the results of the election, noted the spokesman.

Hours after the election in Iraq was closed, US President George W. Bush called Sunday's poll "a resounding success."

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said there was still a great deal to do in helping grow Iraq's democracy as he hailed the Iraqi election as a success.
