Overseas Chinese in Japan and Chinese Japanese on Monday voiced their strong support for the reunification of China at a symposium held here to mark the 10th anniversary of a speech delivered by former Chinese President Jiang Zemin on the Taiwan issue, known as the "eight-point proposal."

At the symposium sponsored by the Chinese Embassy, Chinese Ambassador Wang Yi said the important speech delivered by Jiang 10years ago serves as a guideline for solving the Taiwan issue, adding it has far-reaching historic significance and is also realistic.

The ambassador also said that at a commemorative gathering on Friday, Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, spoke highly of Jiang's policies on the Taiwan issue embodied in the proposal.

Jia Qinglin's remarks expounded views and proposals of the Chinese government on the outstanding issues concerning the cross-Straits relations, and serves as a guiding principle in dealing with the Taiwan issue, Wang said.

Underlining the traditional patriotism among the overseas Chinese in Japan and the Taiwan compatriots, Wang appealed to themto make new contributions to the cause of China's peaceful reunification and revitalization.

Chen Kunwang, honorary chairman of an overseas Chinese and Chinese Japanese organization, said the new Chinese leaders rack their brains for the reunification of the motherland, showing the uttermost sincerity and patience.

He said the overseas compatriots definitely oppose the separatist activities orchestrated by the Taiwan authorities.

Yu Xin, deputy director of the Japan Cross-Straits Relations Research Institute, said that "One China" is the highest principleand a fundamental fact which enjoys international recognition.

Yu said overseas Chinese firmly support China's enactment of the Anti-Secession Law.
