Representatives of overseas Chinese in Myanmar gathered Wednesday in Yangon to mark the 10th anniversary of the speech by then Chinese President Jiang Zemin on the Taiwan issue, known as the "eight-point proposal."
The participants said the speech is significantly important. They firmly supported the Chinese government's policy of "peaceful reunification," "one country, two systems," and firmly opposed the "Taiwan Independence" separatist scheme.
Chinese ambassador Li Jinjun thanked them for their support to the peaceful reunification of the motherland.
Representatives from organizations including those of Taiwan merchants noted that the Chinese government is making its best efforts with sincerity to gain peaceful reunification of the motherland, urging the Taiwan authorities to respond positively.
They held that upholding of "one-China" principle is a prerequisite of the realization of peaceful reunification which not only conforms to the fundamental interest of the people but also benefits the maintenance of peace in the Taiwan straits.
