China has established a new maritime rescue base by Bohai Bay, an accident-frequent sea area.

Located at the Yangtouwa port of Dalian City in northeastern Liaoning Province, the new base will be responsible for maritime rescue and salvage operations at the water areas around Dalian, Lushun and Laotieshan.

The maritime rescue base, which boasts a 190-meter-long dock and an 2,100-square meter helicopter apron, is said to be the best-equipped one in the north China. The Ministry of Communications invested 48.9 million yuan (5.9 million US dollars) to build the base.

Song Jiahui, head of the ministry's Rescue and Salvage Bureau, said the operation of the new rescue base marked that a coordinated maritime rescue system has been established for the Bohai Bay, which is composed of five rescue bases and eight vessels and three helicopters and planes for rescue missions at sea areas within 50 sea miles.

The Bohai Bay is well-known for the complex climate where the low temperature and severe storms in winter are factor for frequent maritime accidents.

Besides the Bohai Bay, the Chinese government has also established similar coordinated maritime rescue systems at the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
