Strong earthquake hits Papua New Guinea
font size

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale took place off the coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG) early on Tuesday, with no reports of injures or property damage so far, Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio reported.

The epicenter was located under the ocean some 100 kilometers east of New Britain Island, Geoscience Australia seismologists were quoted as saying.

The earthquake was felt in PNG capital Port Moresby, but too weak to cause damage, the report said.

Seismologists also ruled out the danger of devastating tsunamis

to be caused by the tremor for the nearby areas.
