China's leading automobile producer, the First Automobile Works Group Company (FAW), sold 620,886 sedans in 2004, topping China's major auto producers, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The survey was carried out among 27 auto manufacturers in China.

"It wasn't easy for the FAW to take first place among national sedan producers," said An Dewu, deputy general manager of the company, which maintained stead growth momentum despite the volatile auto market in 2004.

Sedan sales took about 61.6 percent of the automobile sales in 2004, up 11 percent from the same period last year, An said.

The FAW rolled out more than ten new models to meet the various demands of consumers.

The sales of complete cars by China's FAW Group hit more than one million units in 2004. Of these, 50 percent were models of its own brands. It also exported nearly 10,000 cars of its own brands.
