The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) demanded an apology from South Korea after a South Korean soldier fired a bullet Monday night at a military post in DPRK, at the eastern part of the inter-Korean border.

DPRK said those responsible should be punished.

DPRK's Korean Central News Agency carried an article Tuesday, saying a bullet was fired at a DPRK military post from a South Korean guard post in Yanggu, about 175 kilometers northeast of Seoul, at around 8 o'clock Monday night.

The article warns if South Korea committed similar acts, the DPRK army will take strong countermeasures.

However, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the bullet was fired accidentally during a safety check of rifles.
