The US-led United Nations Command (UNC) has launched an investigation into a South Korean soldier's firing of live rounds into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the South Korean Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the DPRK accused South Korea of firing two machine gun rounds at a DPRK outpost on the eastern section of the sealed inter-Korean border. The DPRK said its soldiers were threatened bythe firing.
In response, South Korea admitted on Tuesday that one of its soldiers accidentally fired one tracer bullet, not two rounds.
"As soon as the UNC's investigation is over, its results will be sent to the North (DPRK) via a telegram message," Shin Hyun-don,a spokesman at the Defense Ministry, was quoted by South Korean Yonhap News Agency as saying.
According to the armistice that ended the 1950-1953 Korean War,the UNC has the right to investigate border incidents such as firing exchanges between the two countries.
