Advisors underline judicial justice in harmonious society
font size

Members of China's top advisory body Sunday stressed the importance of judicial justice in China's building of a harmonious society, a goal reiterated by Premier Wen Jiabao in his work report to the parliament.

Democracy, the rule of law and justice are among the most important characteristics of a harmonious society, and judicial authorities have a major role to play to that end, said members ofthe National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) during a panel discussion.

Conflicts are unavoidable among different interest groups during China's economic restructuring period, said Luo Haocai, vice chairman of CPPCC's National Committee, adding that it is the"right time" for the Chinese government to map out a blueprint on building of a harmonious society.

"A harmonious society is not one without conflicts, but one where all conflicts and disputes can be solved through normal and legal means and therefore won't escalate into hostility or massive clashes," said Deng Weizhi, a noted sociologist and member to the advisory body.

Judicial authorities play a major role in dealing with conflicts and disputes and maintaining social order, said Wan Exiang, vice president of the Supreme People's Court. He said China's judicial authorities settle more than 6 million conflicts and disputes every year.

"We should attach great importance to the judicial authorities' role in solving disputes, make sure they are fair and neutral, respect their authority and build a sound judicial environment," he said in an interview with Xinhua.
