Beijing starts constructing 7 projects out of 36 for Olympics

The construction of facilities for Beijing Olympics has started in full swing. By far 7 of the 36 infrastructure projects have started construction and one of them has been completed.

Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice chairman of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), said as the venue of soccer games of the 2008 Olympics the Qinhuangdao Stadium has been completed in 2004. It is the first completed new facility for the Olympics in China.

According to Jiang Xiaoyu newly started Olympic projects will go in full swing this year. The plan for the Beijing Olympic facilities is One Central Area and Three Key Areas. The One Central Area is the center of the Olympics, which is located in Beijing's Chaoyang district. The Three Key Areas are university area, western community and northern scenic and tourism area. It is expected that by the end of 2007 work on new projects will be completed in succession and rebuilding and expansion on existing facilities will also be finished by then.

As learned the Beijing Olympics will be needing 36 stadiums and gyms as playing fields and another 60-odd for training. Thirty-one of the 36 stadiums and gyms are in Beijing and 5 in other cities. Sailing events will be held in Qingdao. Four branch playing venues for soccer games will be set in Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao. Among the 31 facilities in Beijing 11 are new projects, 12 are rebuilt facilities and 8 are temporary ones.
