font size

Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa declared Tuesday that amendments of the Constitution relatedto women's rights are under discussion.

The time has come for the government to make amendments of the constitution, improving some sections that have been obstacles forwomen's development and future, said Mkapa during the ceremony marking the International Women's Day held on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam.

However, the president did not detail which parts of the constitution needed amendments.

Earlier, local media reported that Tanzania had a plan to increase the proportion of women's seats in the Parliament.

The president also encouraged women to join the ongoing voter registration and vote to elect their leader in the upcoming general elections.
