Venezuela to reinforce vigilance along border with Colombia
font size

The Venezuelan government will discuss an ambitious plan Thursday to reinforce security along its border with Colombia, the authorities said Wednesday.

The plan is aimed at coping with kidnappers, illegal armed groups and the potential "impact" of the demobilization of Colombian paramilitaries on Venezuela, said Vice President Jose Rangel through a communique.

The plan includes a restructuring of the security operation along the 2,000 km of the Venezuela-Colombia borderline, a zone of frequent bilateral friction due to kidnappings, organized crimes and the presence of illegal groups of Colombia.

Under the plan, Venezuela will reinforce the military and police facilities along the border, with helicopters and night-vision gear to be deployed. The country will also re-locate law-enforcement personnel there.

Interior Minister Jesse Chacon underlined the adverse effects on the border area resulting from the presence of kidnappers, gunmen, guerrillas, drug pushers and smugglers, noting the problemcould deteriorate with Colombia's demobilization of paramilitaries.
