Premier Wen Jiabao's Government Work Report sets forth new tasks and requirements for further strengthening national defense and army building, calling on the army to consciously plan and guide military work from a political height and the interest of the nation as a whole, to push forward military reform with Chinese characteristics and combat readiness as well as to do its best to enhance the army's overall combat capability in the information age, said Liang Guanglie, NPC deputy, CMC (Central Military Commission) member and Chief of the PLA General Staff.

The army must be consciously subordinated to and serve the country's overall development strategy, resolutely support reform, adopt a correct attitude toward interest-related adjustment and actively support the national economic construction, so as to make new contribution to the economic and social development and provide a strong security guarantee for the building of a well-off society.

Liang emphasized the need to actively comply with the requirement of advancing the military change with Chinese characteristics, engage in scientific planning, give prominence to key points, deepen reform and further accelerate army informationization. He called for doing a solid job in making combat readiness and intensifying mission-related training, and for efforts to do a good job in personnel training, resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, unity and stability, and conscientiously shoulder the historical missions entrusted by the Party and people to the army in the new century and new stage.
