Russia opposes putting a draft resolution on the Chechen situation on the agenda of the upcoming session of the UN Commission on Human Rights scheduled for Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry told the European Union (EU) and the United States on Saturday.
"Russia has never refused to cooperate on the Chechen issue with the international community. However, we will not allow anyone to gamble on the theme of human rights observance in Chechnya and try to derive some opportunistic political dividends from this," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yury Fedotov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Over the past five years, Fedotov said, the EU countries and the United States have tried to criticize the Russian authorities through the commission sessions for its actions in the North Caucasus region.
While the two draft resolutions on the Chechnya situation submitted by the EU were rejected at the last two sessions, a similar attempt might again be made by the Western countries at the upcoming session, he said.
The minister described submitting such a draft resolution as an "inappropriate and untimely step on the part of the EU."
"The Russian leadership has proven to everybody, including the most inveterate skeptics, that it is absolutely committed to a political settlement process, an integral part of which is the normalization of the human rights situation in the Chechen republic," Fedotov said.
