Forest coverage rate hits 13.8 pct in Jiangsu

East China's Jiangsu province planted trees on 105,333 hectares in 2004, creating 13.9 percent forest coverage in the region.

The province has developed 426,666 hectares of forest networks since last year and increased additional urban green space to total 4,300 hectares.

The forest sector witnessed surging growth in 2004, with 343 key forest enterprises achieving sales exceeding 5 million yuan (602,409 US dollars) and taxes above 500,000 yuan (60,240 US dollars).

The province invested nearly 3.6 billion yuan (433.7 million US dollars) to develop forest construction last year, and achieved 56.64 billion yuan (6.82 billion US dollars) in output value from theforest sector, up 34.4 percent year-on-year.
