Chinese students, scholars in Britain back China's anti-secession law
font size

Chinese students and scholars in Britain expressed firm support on Monday for China's Anti-Secession Law which aims to prevent Taiwan's secession from China.

The adoption of the law, which is necessary and timely, reflects the common wish of all the Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese, said the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the United Kingdom (CSSA-UK) in a statement.

The group said its more than 30,000 registered members believe that the law will play an important and historic role in promoting peaceful reunification, contain separatist activities in Taiwan and maintain stability across the Taiwan Straits.

"This is a law in the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation," it said.

The law is also a piece of well-meaning legislation for peace and demonstrates the determination of the Chinese government and people to do their utmost for peaceful reunification, it said.

The CSSA-UK also expressed its members' willingness to work together with Chinese compatriots for an early realization of national reunification.

China's National People's Congress passed the legislation with an overwhelming vote of 2,896 to nil with two abstentions earlier on the day.

The CSSA-UK, set up in 1988, has more than 50 subsidiary associations across Britain.
