Japanese council approves proposal to establish 'Takeshima Day'

Ignoring South Korean protests, a Japanese provincial legislature approved a controversial proposal Wednesday to boost Japan's claim to a group of South Korean islets.

The move by Shimane Prefecture to create a day on its calendar to promote Japan's claim to Dokdo, also known as Takeshima in Japan, is expected to further escalate tension between the two Asian historical rivals.
