30,000 Tibetan farmers and herdsmen set foot in tourism industry

The six economic pillar industries, set by Tibet Autonomous Region featuring local characteristics, have accelerated the development of tourism under the leadership of autonomous region government. In 2004, 12,200 domestic and international tourists visited Tibet, bringing a total tourism revenue of 1.5 billion yuan to the local government. As a result, nearly 30,000 farmers and herdsmen set their foot in the tourism industry, with the newly added service income reaching 60-plus million yuan, and newly added per capita income 2,328 yuan.

According to the Overall plan for the development of tourism industry in Tibet Autonomous Region, almost 400,000 Tibetan will involve in the tourism industry till 2020, i.e. one Tibetan among every four will take up an occupation in tourism industry.
