Russian airliner crash kills 49: report

A Russian airliner carrying 49 people crashed in a region in Russia's far north on Wednesday, killing all 49 people on board, Russian news agencies reported.

The An-24 plane, which was reportedly carrying oil industry workers, crashed early afternoon near the town of Barandei in the Nenets autonomous region while trying to make an emergency landingand caught fire. All 45 passengers and four crew-members are reportedly dead, according to preliminary report of the Transportation Ministry, said the Interfax news agency.

The plane belonging to the Kemerovo flight squadron was en route from Usinsk in the Komi republic to Varandei when it carried out an emergency landing 5 kilometers from the Varandei airfield.
