Syria reasserts firm support to China's anti-secession law

Syria voiced on Wednesday its firm support to China's newly adopted anti-secession law.

"The anti-secession law adopted by China's National People's Congress (NPC) stresses the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of China and safeguards the stability across the Taiwan Straits with an aim to achieve the peaceful reunification of China," Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Syria supports friendly China in taking such a wise policy and position," it added.

The statement also highlights the importance to maintain friendly cooperation between Syria and China.

On Tuesday, Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said during a meeting with Chinese ambassador to Syria Zhou Xiuhua that Syria fully understands the law and supports China's peaceful reunification.

Syria opposes any form of Taiwan independence, Muallem said, stressing that Syria will consistently stand by China to fight against any attempt of Taiwan independence secessionists.

On Monday, China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), unanimously adopted the anti-secession law, setting a legal framework to prevent Taiwan's secession from China and to promote peaceful national reunification.

Shortly after the ratification, Chinese President Hu Jintao signed a presidential decree for the immediate promulgation of the law.

The law, which consists of 10 articles, provides for the legislative purpose and scope of application of the legislation, the nature of the Taiwan issue, achieving national reunification through peaceful means and taking non-peaceful means to stop Taiwan's secession from China by the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces.
