China's economic boom won't threaten others: official
font size

China's development won't pose any threat to other countries, said Ma Kai, minister in charge of the State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC) Sunday in Beijing. Instead, he said, it will provide the world's biggest market in the coming 15 years.

Speaking at China Development Forum, Ma said that for the first 20 years of the 21st century China concentrate on developing a thrifty economy and building up a harmonious society.

"On the realization of the goal, China will basically complete industrialization and its Gross Domestic Product will quadruple 2000's to 4 trillion US dollars," the minister said.

During this period, Chinese people's power consumption will continue to grow, and investment will be stimulated accordingly, "since China has abundant labor resource, cheap production cost anda stable society," said Ma.

China's economic boom has "obviously" driven the world's economy, Ma said. "As a developing country in its industrialization period, China has larger space to grow," so other countries cannot compete with it.

Since China adopted its opening up policy in the late 1970s, its imports have grown more than 15 percent annually. In 2004, China was the world's third leading importer. "Such great imports has benefited its partners around the globe, and because of which, some countries even shake off their economic stagnancy," Ma said.

"The opportunities brought by China's peaceful development have outweighed the challenges," Ma said.
