Tornado kills 7, injures hundreds in N.Bangladesh

At least seven persons were killed and hundreds injured after tornado hit two Bangladeshi districts Sunday night.

The state television BTV said the tornado that lasted for 20 minutes, hit the north western Gaibanda and Rangpur districts at about 21:00 Sunday night.

The tornado killed at least five people and injured several hundred in Gaibanda, 276 km from the capital. The tornado killed two persons and injured unspecified number of people in Rangpur, 332 km from the capital.

The tornado has flattened thousands of homes, uprooted electricpoles, leveled trees and disrupted power supply in many areas of the two districts.

The television said the district administrations have launched rescue operations and sending the injured in different nearby hospitals for treatment.

Details were not available immediately.

Tornado and cyclones are common in this calamity prone South Asian country and kill hundreds of people every year.
