Lester Brown, president of Earth Policy Institute, a well-known international institution dedicated to the cause of environment protection, said during his speech at Peking University that he is confident on China's capability of ensuring its food security in light of the new global food security challenge.
At the invitation of College of Environmental Science, Peking University, Propaganda and Education Centre under State Environmental Protection Administration, as well as Beijing Contemporary World Development Institute, Brown delivered a speech at North Wing Building, Peking University Library. On his trip to China, Mr. Brown also brought his new work, Outgrowing the Earth: The Food Security Challenge in an Age of Falling Water Tables and Rising Temperatures . Several years ago, he wrote a book entitled Who Feeds China, in which he took up the food crisis in China. The book was quite popular in those years.
He said that he is quite confident on China's capability of ensuring its food security, because Chinese economy has been quadrupled, which demonstrated the China's extraordinary ability in dealing with various economic difficulties. Living standard in China has been comprehensively bettered off, and poverty and malnutrition have been eliminated to a great extent. However, it will be a challenge for China to continue this current development. Brown believed that western traditional development pattern could not help China realise this object, and China must development a new economic pattern, which should be both environmentally sustainable and in accordance with current situation in China. It is a huge challenge demanding painstaking effort, rich vision and a strong leadership.
