M5.1 aftershocks hit southwest Japan

A major aftershock measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the southwest Japan's Kyushu island Tuesday afternoon following Sunday's M7.0 quake in the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

No casualties have been reported, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake, which hit at around 3:55 p.m. (0655 GMT), registered a maximum intensity of 3 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Fukuoka Prefecture and its surrounding areas, according tothe agency.

The M7.0 quake, which registered a maximum intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese seismic scale in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures, left a woman dead and about 500 people injured. The 10:53 a.m. (0153 GMT) quake, also damaged many houses and paralyzed land traffic and utilities.
