E.China province beautifies Yellow River area by planting trees

East China's Shandong province has expanded the green coverage along the Yellow River since the beginning of 2005, and is expected to add two more "green belts" along its 628 km embankment of the Yellow River by 2010, an official with the provincial government said Monday.

The Yellow River, the river with the world's highest sand density, originates in northwest China's Qinghai province, passes through nine provinces and flows into the sea in Shandong.

Pei Mingsheng, an official with the provincial Yellow River Administration, said the two "green belts" will cover 5,666 hectares of land by 2010, with aspens, willows, Japanese pagoda trees and gingkoes.

The province published a regulation on the Yellow River flood prevention project last year, which has accelerated the green land coverage along the Yellow River embankment, Coverage has now reached 3,666 hectares.

Pei also noted that the two "green belts" will become tourism scenery areas, next only to seaside scenic spots and Tai'an-Qufu, which will bring favorable profits to the province.
