HK official: All CE by-election related issues should be handled according to Basic Law
font size

Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam said here Wednesday that all

issues related to the Chief Executive (CE) by-election should be handled in accordance with the Basic Law, the principles of laws in Hong Kong and the national constitution.

He made the remarks at the Hong Kong Development Forum.

He said the amendment bill on the CE's term of office is based on the legal research by Hong Kong's Secretary for Justice, and these legal suggestions have been agreed by the Legislative

Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC). Thus the amendment bill has its legal basis.

Lam said that in the past seven and a half years, Hong Kong's legal system has not suffered any damage as Hong Kong established its Court of Final Appeal after Hong Kong returned to the

motherland in 1997 and the legal system is complete in Hong Kong.

He said the interpretation of the Basic Law by the NPC Standing Committee is aimed at solving problems in Hong Kong. He believed that the Hong Kong citizens have seen with their eyes the fact.

He expressed the hope that the Hong Kong public will support the amendment bill. So long as Hong Kong people adhere to practicing in accordance with the Basic Law, all the issues relating to the CE by-election will surly be solved, he said.
