font size

The Chief Executive Election (Amendment) (Term of Office of the Chief Executive) Bill was gazetted Thursday, according to a government press release.

It proposes to amend the Chief Executive Election Ordinance to provide that a chief executive who fills a vacancy that arises before the expiry of the term of office shall serve the remainder of the term.

Article 53 of the Basic Law provides that a new Chief Executive shall be selected within six months for appointment by the Central People's Government.

The Constitutional Affairs Bureau said the bill will provide a clear legal basis for the term of the new CE and will be tabled at Legislative Council on April 6.
