Top Colombian drug trafficker arrested in joint operation

One of Colombia's top drug traffickers Wenceslato Caicedo was captured in a joint Colombian-Ecuadorian operation, said sources of the Colombian government on Saturday.

Caicedo was arrested in Manta, Ecuador with his bodyguards on Friday evening, said the sources, noting he was later handed over to Colombia.

The police later raided Cali in western Colombia and ports of Buenaventura and Tumaco, two cities along the Colombian Pacific Ocean littoral.

Other eight suspected smugglers were also arrested in the aboveoperations, said Oscar Naranjo, head of Colombia's Central Direction of the Judicial Police.

He said those arrested were members of an organization that utilizes fishermen "to transport the drug on high seas to other ships, usually from Mexico."

The United States is likely to make a demand of extradition of Caicedo as he faces several charges in the country.
