font size

Thailand and Laos will resume talks on border issues after a suspension of more than two years, Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Supamongkhon has said.

Thailand's Foreign Minister Kantathi Supamongkhon, after meeting his Lao counterpart Somsavad Lengsawat in Vientiane, said that Thailand intends to settle outstanding land border issues with Laos by the end of the year. And Somsavad expressed the willingness to cooperate, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported Monday.

Since most issues regarding the two country's 72 km-long land border have been settled down, the talks are set to focus on the 7percent of the unresolved border line.

Thailand expected to sign an agreement with Laos to buy electricity generated by the Nam Ngum River before the Songkran festival next month, Kantathi said.

In order to alleviate the crippling drought in Thailand, Laos also pledged to divert water from Nam Ngum dam to the kingdom, thereport said.
