Earthquake measuring 8.2 rocks Indian Ocean

An huge earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Monday, the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center confirmed Monday.

A brief statement issued by the center said the earthquake occurred at 11:09:37 pm local time at the epicenter (16:09:37 GMT).

The epicenter is 535 km west-south-west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and 1,410 km northwest of Jakarta, Indonesia, according to the statement.
